But I Was Cool!

I’m trying to be cool about sales. Trying not to sink into obssesive checking on my stats every hour, or minute. How’s that working out? Give a listen to the old Oscar Brown song, ‘But I was Cool‘ to get an idea of what it’s like.

They say that the remedy for one woman walking out on you is another woman walking in. One book is out there, and I hope that more than five people will like it, but in the meantime, I’m starting the next two.

My writing process is kinda mechanical; I’ve developed a creative template. The working title for the book is ‘The Borg Conspiracy’ and the story is about the collapse of the American state and the organization of a new American Revolution. Central to the success of the revolution is an FTL vehicle, and alien allies.

My first step is to write out the story, with no dialog and little regard for phrasing, or language, or even spelling. I try to stay with the basic rules of grammar but I don’t worry about much besides getting the story told. That phase of the process is inspiring.

Which is to say that in telling the story, my imagination is loosed and ideas come in a most fortuitous way. When I’m done with the story I go back and do the first draft, using the map I’ve created to guide me. It’s a lot like filling in the blanks then.

I said two, didn’t I? Well I’ll play the next one close to my vest for now. Maybe it’s a book about Mary Kingsley,
